Answers to Your Cat Care Questions

Why isn't 1 cat year equal to 7 human years?
The "1 to 7" rule is a myth. Cats mature much faster in their early years. According to AAHA guidelines, a 1-year-old cat is physically similar to a 15-year-old human, and a 2-year-old is like a 24-year-old. After that, aging slows down to about 4 human years for every cat year. Our Age Converter above uses this updated medical logic.
My cat is overweight. How do I safely reduce their calories?
Safety is key. Never starve a cat, as rapid weight loss can cause a dangerous liver condition called hepatic lipidosis. Vets typically recommend feeding 80% of their RER (Resting Energy Requirement) for ideal weight. Use our Calorie Calculator to find their "Weight Loss" number, but always consult your vet before starting a diet plan.
Does an indoor cat need fewer calories than an outdoor cat?
Yes, absolutely. Indoor cats are typically less active and prone to boredom eating. They generally require about 1.0 to 1.2 times their RER, whereas active outdoor cats might need 1.4 times or more. Overfeeding an indoor cat is the #1 cause of pet obesity.
How do large breeds like Maine Coons age differently?
Large breeds (like Maine Coons or Ragdolls) mature slower than standard cats—they aren't considered "fully grown" until 3-4 years old. However, their lifespan can sometimes be shorter due to their size. Our calculator includes a "Large Breed" option to adjust for this unique developmental timeline.
At what age is my cat considered "senior"?
Cats are generally considered "Senior" starting at age 11 (approx. 60 human years) and "Geriatric" at age 15. At this stage, their ability to digest fat and protein changes. It's crucial to monitor for muscle loss and kidney health. Regular vet checkups (every 6 months) are recommended for seniors.
