Cat Calorie Calculator: Daily Calories, Treats, Meals & BCS

Estimate your cat’s daily calories using a veterinary-style RER formula, then adjust for neuter status, activity, goal, treats, meals, and a BCS-based ideal weight estimate.

  • Daily calories (kcal/day) with clear multiplier breakdown.
  • Treat calories budget + per-meal calories and grams.
  • BCS → ideal weight estimate to support weight-loss planning.

How this calculator works

We estimate a Resting Energy Requirement (RER) and then apply multipliers for life stage, neuter status, activity, and goal. Treat calories are budgeted and subtracted from meal calories.

  • RER: 70 × weight(kg)0.75
  • MER: RER × multipliers
  • Meals: (MER − treats) ÷ meals/day

Quick multiplier reference

FactorTypical
Adult (neutered)~1.2 × RER
Adult (intact)~1.4 × RER
Kitten~2–3 × RER
Weight loss goal~0.8 × (often using ideal weight)

Values vary by individual cat; vet guidance is best.

BCS → Ideal weight (simple estimate)

This v2 uses a simple rule-of-thumb: each BCS point away from 5 is ~10% weight difference. Ideal weight ≈ current ÷ (1 + %over/under).

BCSApprox. vs ideal
4~10% under ideal
5ideal
6~10% over ideal
7~20% over ideal
8~30% over ideal
9~40% over ideal

If your cat has a medical condition (kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, etc.), do not rely on calculators alone.

FAQ

What formula does this cat calorie calculator use?
It estimates RER (70 × weight(kg)0.75) and applies multipliers for life stage, neuter status, activity, and goal.
Should I use current weight or ideal weight?
For weight loss, many plans use an estimated ideal weight (often guided by BCS). For healthy maintenance, current weight is commonly used.
How do treats affect feeding amounts?
Treat calories are budgeted first and subtracted from meal calories. The tool then converts remaining calories into grams of food.
How many meals per day should I feed?
Many cats do well on 2–3 meals/day. This calculator also shows calories and grams per meal to help you portion consistently.
What is BCS and how is ideal weight estimated?
BCS is a 1–9 body condition score. This tool uses a simple rule-of-thumb: each point away from 5 is about a 10% weight difference vs ideal.
What if my cat has a medical condition?
Medical issues and medications can change calorie needs. Use this as general guidance and follow your veterinarian’s plan when needed.
