THE ESSENTIALS
What should cat sitter instructions include?
Give your sitter the everyday routine first, with the right contacts and a clear backup plan close at hand.
- Who’s who: each cat’s name, markings, hiding places and handling preferences.
- Food and water: exact products, portions, units, meal times and refill instructions.
- Litter and home routine: box locations, cleaning supplies, waste and room rules.
- Health notes: known concerns and the current prescribed directions for any medication.
- People and places: owner, local backup, regular vet, emergency clinic and carrier location.
- Visit arrangements: agreed coverage, updates and what happens if access or a visit fails.
AAHA’s pet-sitter guidance covers profiles, routines, supplies and emergency information. [1]
Three useful copies, one care pack
A quick reference for contacts, agreed visits, access backup and who’s who.
Food, litter, handling and health directions kept with the correct cat.
Space for observations, medication given and the update sent after a visit.
Before sharing, resolve every relevant TO CONFIRM marker and read the routine together.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE
Show the routine, then hand over the sheet.
A short walkthrough helps your sitter connect the notes with the cats, supplies and care arrangements.

Keep the original directions available, with a separate entry for each cat and medication.
Which medication details should I write down?
Copy the medication name, dose and unit, administration method, local times, last dose given, next dose due, storage and the veterinary team’s missed-dose instructions.
Use the current prescription and demonstrate the routine with your sitter. Confirm unknown instructions with the prescribing team before departure.
What should the emergency plan contain?
Leave clinic phone numbers and addresses, carrier location, transport arrangements and a reachable local backup.
Record where existing clinic consent and payment arrangements can be found. Arrange these directly with the people and clinic involved. Share door and account codes separately with your trusted sitter.
